Objection Letter Sent to Maneka Gandhi Over Remarks on Digambar Jain Monks and Peacock Feather Whisk

Bhagwan Mahavir Deshna Foundation Director, Mr. Manoj Kumar Jain, has sent a formal letter to former Union Minister Ms. Maneka Gandhi, expressing strong objection to her recent remarks concerning the use of peacock feather whisks (Mayur Picchhi) by Digambar Jain monks at the Lal Mandir complex in Delhi.

In the letter, the Foundation stated that the remarks have hurt the sentiments of the Jain community across the country, particularly followers of the Digambar sect, as well as millions of people associated with India’s religious and cultural traditions.

The Foundation clarified that the peacock feather whisk used by Digambar Jain monks is made only from naturally shed peacock feathers. Its purpose is to gently remove small living beings from the path, thereby protecting them and upholding the core Jain principle of Ahimsa (non-violence).

The letter further emphasized that peacock feathers are not only significant in Jain traditions but also hold deep spiritual value in the broader Sanatan culture. The peacock feather adorning Lord Krishna’s crown is a revered symbol of Indian faith and cultural heritage. Therefore, any allegation made without proper evidence can create misunderstanding in society and hurt religious sentiments.

While acknowledging Ms. Maneka Gandhi’s contributions to animal welfare and environmental protection, the Foundation has respectfully urged her to review her statement. It has also requested that if the remarks are found to be factually incorrect or misleading, she should withdraw them publicly and express regret in order to respect the sentiments of the Jain community and devotees.

Additionally, the Foundation suggested that before making public comments on matters related to religious practices, it would be appropriate to consult representatives of the concerned community and subject experts. Such dialogue would help strengthen harmony, mutual respect, and trust within society.

The Bhagwan Mahavir Deshna Foundation expressed hope that the seriousness of the issue will be understood and addressed with sensitivity, promoting communal harmony and social cohesion.
