Myriad Emotions of Courtroom Drama Depicted in the Legal Masterpiece – ‘Yours Legally’ by Sonia Sahijwani Saini

How beautifully the eminent legal scholar; Steven Keeva has defined, “Law is one of the great healing professions , while medicine heals the body and clergy heals the soul the law heals the societal rifts” which might ideally hold true in a civilized society but ironically has been on the brink of demoralization in the current stern society. Gone are those days when law was viewed as a means of justice for the weaker and oppressed sections of the society! At this juncture when the law seems to be in a labyrinth of power and wealth, Yours Legally by Sonia Sahijwani Saini comes as an eye-opener which covers the various facades of the current discrepancies of the legal system of the country.

Yours Legally– a collection of short stories, published in Feb 2019 through a Mumbai based publisher Becomeshakespeare is getting rave reviews on social media for its bold approach to the subject. Ms. Sonia who is a commerce graduate from Delhi University sought more intellectual stimulation and made an unusual digression towards the field of law. Despite being academically inclined, she fully devoted herself for her passion for writing and cherished her dream since then. In the quest of following her passion, little did she know that her law degree coupled with her experiences in this challenging profession would be the perfect ingredients for her debut book ‘Yours Legally’.

Talking about her brainchild, the author says with utmost honesty that her stories have been inspired by true incidents and events which she herself witnessed in courts and prisons as a part of her various trainings, internships and her first job in a PSU at New Delhi. Each story revolves around an element of law which she feels is critical to the profession being: the complainant, case, court/judge, counsel, crime/offence and the criminal/accused and there is an underlying message in each one of them. Each of these incidents left a deep impact in the author’s life and she was keen to bring out these stories for the common man to read.

While law is omnipresent and all of us have to abide by the rules and regulations in some way or the other in our daily lives, most of us are not really aware of what in fact happens inside a courtroom or how does a prison look like. The author, through her book tries to portray a true picture which is perhaps in stark contrast to how it is shown in the movies or in the media.

Yours Legally flourishes on its central theme which makes it stand apart from others. It deals with the law profession which is rarely explicitly talked about in books. The stories have been narrated through the eyes of the main protagonist Sia with the thread of law and humanity binding each of the story as the book progresses and attempts to capture the reality behind the law and order situation in India. The reader will feel connected to Sia from the inception as she keeps on taking the challenges in her stride and goes on to grab every opportunity to prove her mettle.

All these six stories have a dash of satire and humour and reflect the myriad emotions of hardship, failure, victory, passion hope and determination which each reader can relate to. Each story tries to portray a different aspect of Indian society. From an old woman to a Judge with astute judgment, from a confident determined visually impaired lawyer to an honest under trial prisoner, the stories will seem as real as it can be.

In the age of facebook, instagram, snapchat and other forms of social media, the author genuinely feels that there are too many books and too little readers and people are losing the habit of picking up a hard copy of a book. It is with this aim to reach out to readers across all ages barring gender specifically targeting those who avoid reading novels (for their length) that the author deliberately kept the book short and crisp.

The book was recently launched at the 18th Pune Book Fair held at Creaticity Mall, Pune on 2nd October 2019 by Mr. Devendra Prabhudesai, an Indian biographer and former Manager at BCCI in Mumbai, India who has written several biographies on famous cricketers from Mr Sunil Gavaskar to Mr Rahul Dravid.
