As the Indian women cricket team is playing against the England women’s team with one eye on the World Cup Trophy, rewards are raining for them. One day after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had announced a monetary reward for the team irrespective of final’s result, Railways minister Suresh Prabhu has now announced out-of-turn promotions for the women cricketers of the Indian World Cup squad who are employed with the Railways, reported news agency PTI.
The current women’s team squad has as many as 10 girls from the Railways including the captain Mithali Raj and vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur. Both these players have been outstanding in the tournament so far. While Mithali is the second leading run-scorer of the tournament, Harman played a sensational knock of 171 runs against Australia in the last match.
Apart from this, the Railway ministry will also give a cash reward to the members of the Indian team. “Hon’ble Minister for Railways, Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu has conveyed his best wishes to the Indian team. He has announced out-of-turn promotions to women cricketers of Railways currently in the Indian World Cup squad in England,” Rekha Yadav, ED/Sports & Secretary of the Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB), said. “There will be cash award too as per our extant policy,” she added.
Apart from Mithali and Harmanpreet, others girls associated with the Railways are Ekta Bisht, Punam Raut, Veda Krishnamurthy, Poonam Yadav, Sushma Verma, Mona Mesharm, Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Nuzhat Parween.
Yesterday, the BCCI had announced a cash reward of Rs 50 lakh for each member of the team. “I would like to congratulate the Indian Women’s Cricket Team for their exemplary show in the ICC Women’s World Cup,” said Committee Of Administrators (CoA) chairman Vinod Rai. “The team has shown tremendous character and the girls have raised the bar with each passing game under the able leadership of Mithali Raj. The Women’s World Cup has been widely followed across India and this team’s spirit and performance on the field has won admirers all over the world. I am sure this team has inspired the next generation of cricketers and many more girls will take up the sport in the years to come,” he had added.
